Today’s interview is with a true rock-and-roll couple: Mark and Sarah Anthony of The Letter Black! Mark is the lead guitarist and Sarah is the lead vocalist. (Her vocals are a force to be reckoned with.)
As John Cooper says, “Couples who rock together stick together.”
SOM: Could you please introduce yourself for the blog?
Sarah Anthony: Hey, I am Sarah Anthony.
Mark Anthony: And I am Mark Anthony
SOM: Could you talk a little about your new album?
MA: The record is definitely the heaviest record we’ve ever recorded. The ongoing theme on this record pretty much goes along with the title of the record. We wanted to talk about real issues that we all go through every day. A lot of us experience pain, but it’s how we react to it that defines who we are.
SOM: You funded this album through a Kickstarter campaign. What do you think made your campaign so successful?
MA: Our fans are what made this record so successful. If they wouldn’t have funded this record, we would have never have been able to make the record we’ve always wanted to make.
SOM: Although you are probably mostly influenced by hard rock, rock and metal, are there any different genres or artists that influence your writing or performing?
MA: Sarah and I both listen to a wide range of music. I happen to really like country music so I draw from that for the storytelling part of the music. Both of us really like pop music as well. She might be able to hear a little bit influence of that in this record with some of the dance beats we have.
SOM: What would your dream tour lineup be and where would you tour?
MA: My dream line up would be Disturbed and Korn. I mean I would love to also tour with Metallica and Avenged Sevenfold as well!! And I will of the tour all over the United States and Europe with all these bands.
SA: My dream line up would be Disturbed and Sevendust. And I would also like to tour all of the United States and Europe with them.
SOM: You guys are from the land of the Pittsburgh Steelers, but are there any sports team rivalries between the band members and/or crew?
Mark really loves the Penguins more than any other sports team in Pittsburgh and he absolutely hates the Detroit Redwings. Justin really likes the San Francisco 49ers. When Sarah’s not sure about the Steelers, she’s rooting for the Indianapolis Colts because that’s where she’s from.
SOM: If you could collaborate with any musician (living or dead), who would you choose?
MA: Mine would have to be James Hetfield.
SA: Mine would have to be Alanis Morissette.
SOM: If you were stuck on a deserted island and could only listen to one album, what album would you choose and why?
MA: The only record I would take with me would be Master Of Puppets by Metallica. The reason why is because I believe that is the greatest metal record ever recorded. It has the best riffs that everybody tries to re-create still to this day.
SA: This one simple for me. The new Pain record from The Letter Black.
SOM: What lyric, quote, line, or Bible verse helps get you through a hard day?
SA: Jeremiah 29:11. For I know the plans I have for you says the Lord; they are plans for good and not for disaster to give you a future and a hope.
MA: Compared to what? Life is never easy but I look around me and see I have no room to complain compared to what other people are going through on a daily basis.
SOM: What advice would you give to a musician beginning their career in the music industry?
MA: Get ready to hear the word no a lot. But take the criticism and put it to good use. It will help shape you and mold you to the best musician you could possibly be.
SA: Know when to quit and went to keep going. This career is not for everybody. You have to be willing to risk it all and know that it may take years before you see any pay off.
