Artist Interview: Rob Beckley

This month, I was absolutely honored to work with Rob Beckley, lead vocalist of the rock band Pillar! Both he and his manager were so polite and extremely wonderful to work with! The interview took place on June 13 over email. Read it below:

Introduction: My name is Rob Beckley and I am the husband of an amazing wife, Linda, for 15 years.  I am the father of 5 amazing kids.  I am currently a pastor and have loved the journey that God has taken me on.  I started with the band from the begin back in January of 1998.  Since then we have sold almost 1 million records and have played in front of hundreds of thousand’s of fans from all over the world.

RB: First of all, thank you so much for thinking of us for your new column.  We are incredibly honored to be  a part of it.
As for the new record I am a bit biased, but I would argue that collectively this is our best record!  The songs are all great.  The guys really made this an easy record to write lyrics for.
SOM: Since you don’t play traditional “Christian” music, how have you dealt with the legalism over the years?
RB: We were fortunate enough to be on the beginning stages of accepting heavier music in the Christian industry.  We have had some interesting things happen that have lead to great stories to tell our kids about.  The easiest thing for us to say now is nothing.  I don’t want to contribute anymore to the fighting and arguing amongst the body of Christ.
SOM:  What is your advice to people hoping to make it into the music industry ?

John Cooper of Skillet and Rob Beckley

RB: You have to make sure it is your passion and not a hobby.  If it truly is a dream, then you have to wake up every single day and do something that is going to get you closer to achieving it!
SOM: . Who are your biggest musical influences?
RB: My favorite artist is Johnny Cash.  I loved his “this is the way it is” mentality.   He was simple and complex all at the same time.
SOM: What is the most random thing that has inspired you to write a song?
RB: The chaos of having five kids! Haha  I wrote the song “Embrace the Chaos” because that is my motto at home.

SOM: What is your favorite Bible verse?
RB: Proverbs 1:32-33 “For the waywardness of the simple will kill them, and the complacency of fools will destroy them; but whoever listens to me will live in safety and be at ease, without fear of harm.”
SOM: Do you have any pre-show rituals?
RB: Push ups and jumping jacks was always mine.  I had to get the blood flowing!
SOM: I know the guys in Disciple love to play baseball  and the guys in RED love to go golfing while on tour. What do you like to do in your downtime on tour?
RB:I used to play golf every chance I had while on the road.
Pillar from left to right: Noah Henson (lead guitar), Michael Wittig (bass), Rob Beckley (lead vocals), and Lester Estelle II (drums).
SOM: If you were stuck on a desert island and could only listen to one album, what album would you choose and why?
RB: Rocky IV soundtrack!  I would just train until I die!  Haha!
SOM: If you could play a show with any musicians/bands (living or dead), who would you choose and where would you play?
RB: Johnny Cash at the Electric Factory in Philly!
